The story behind Assassin's Mate (Supernaturally Shipwrecked Series) plus excerpt and video
December 15th, 2015 is the release date for Assassin's Mate from the Supernaturally Shipwrecked Series. The novella is a HEA for a Tigress named Silver aka Scarlet and her Panther mate Brock. Every book in this series will be HEA or HFN for the adult romances and can be read out of order just like my Demon Fairy Tales (Dragons' Succubus and Dragon's Demon Dancer), Vanished (Death Interrupted and The Mating Challenge), Mystery Springs (The Witch's Vampire), Magical Secrets (Genie's Treasure), and the Paranormal Hypnotherapy Files (Cherished Gift).
I started this series as a shifter dating cruise which was connected to the Refuge Island which is an island paranormal creatures go to for sanctuary. Silver/Scarlett's sister, brother, mom and pop are actually in hiding on this island and Silver goes to work for a cruise line as a way to escape her psychotic ex-fiance. This was adapted from the dating cruise idea to an action packed, page turning adventure of a man falling for a girl and risking his life to save her from marrying the wrong man. Going forward the series will focus on patrons of the supernatural cruise ship and Refuge Island.
I also decided to try cat shifters in this novella because I polled my reading club and they mentioned cat shifters would be an interesting change. I really enjoyed writing the purr-fect romance for these two characters and I think you're going to finish the book and feel good about the romantic story and the adventure.
Check out more from me on the novella in this video.
Here is an excerpt for this adult paranormal shifter romance. I hope you enjoy the story.

Introduction:
Scarlett Jennings is on the
run from a sadistic ex-fiancé. She takes refuge on a supernatural cruise liner
as a dancer. She doesn’t make plans for her future because she knows he will
find her someday. Brock Martin is part of an order of assassins. He hops on the
supernatural cruise to kill his next target but is intercepted by a red-headed
tigress. After one kiss he makes plans to take out his mark and spend the rest
of the week courting the beautiful dancer. There’s only one problem with those
plans, his Scarlett has a hefty price on her head and he’s been dispatched to
collect.
Chapter One
Scarlett Jennings caught a movement
out of her peripheral vision as she was working through the new choreography
for the coming night’s performance backstage. Damn cat vision was more of a
curse than a blessing. Being the only one scheduled for the stage for the next thirty
minutes the appearance of another person was suspicious. The hair that rose on
the back of her neck had her running softly after the intruder when she landed
from her leap across the stage. Something wasn’t right. If she was smart she’d
call the cruise line’s security team, but she and authorities didn’t mix well
and she’d feel idiotic if she called the cops on a fellow dancer that was
simply getting ready for his scheduled time on the stage. It wasn’t the best way
to make a first impression with whoever the stranger was, and she couldn’t afford
the drama that might come from narking on a colleague who wasn’t doing anything
wrong. Without this job, she only had one other option and sanctuary wasn’t the
right move at the moment. It would put those she loved in danger. She needed this
dancing gig far more than she’d ever admit out loud.
Her slippered feet padded silently
across the floor as she followed the shadowy figure that went deeper into the
unauthorized area of the ship. She was pretty sure this intruder wasn’t a
fellow performer and began to rethink her pursuit. The cat that shared her mind
warned of danger and flooded her body with adrenaline. The instinct to turn and
escape was strong, but the urge to chase prey was stronger. The cat and human
were at odds, and once again the tigress would win the battle for control. Her
speed picked up as she continued to follow the mysterious figure further into
the ship.
He, (she assumed he was a he
because of his build), took a left down a restricted hallway. She continued her
stalking, and was taken by surprise when strong arms snaked around her waist
and slammed her against the ship’s wall. “What the…” the impact took her breath
away and his dangerous looks robbed her of her second breath.
His hand covered her mouth as he
moved closer to her neck and whispered, “Why are you following me?”
Her heart beat double time. Her
eyes grew large, pupils dilated as fear flooded her system. She felt a primal
need to escape, but another, deep down, wanted to stay. This wasn’t the same
fear she felt in Joshua’s presence. This was different. She tried to talk, but
his large hand muffled her words. “Mrph um mph.”
“I’m going to remove my hand. If
you scream, I’ll break your neck, understand?”
Scarlett nodded. His words should’ve
chilled her to the core, should have, but they didn’t. His intensity excited
her. Something was obviously wrong with her mind. She’d never felt so many
mixed feelings. Her first inclination was to fight the man, and her second was
to kiss his rugged lips. Everywhere he touched a spark lit in her nerves and
sent her brain into panic mode. Her fight-or-flight instinct should take over,
only, instead, she wanted to curl up in the man’s lap and purr.
Slowly, he moved his hand from her
lips, but kept his other hand on her waist, fingernails digging softly into her
flesh holding her against the wall, and keeping her from fleeing even if she
wanted to, which was the farthest thing from her thoughts in that minute.
“Why are you following me?” The
snarl in his voice was far from scary, more sexy and primal.
Gods, Scarlett. Pull
it together, she chastised herself silently. “I saw you backstage and was
curious,” she lied.
“So you put yourself at risk out of
curiosity?” He sounded irritated with her. Why? He was the one doing suspicious
things.
She shrugged. “You know what they say,
‘curiosity kills the cat’.”
Uncomfortable silence spread
between them as he stared into her eyes, like he could see into her soul and
read her thoughts. Finally he said, “I suppose you’re going to tell me you’re a
cat shifter.”
His grip on her waist eased up, and
she felt sad at the loss of pressure from his hand. She never liked the bad boy
types, probably because her ex-fiancé was the worst of the devils, but
something about this man made her ignite. “I’ll share what I am if you’ll
reciprocate.”
A tiny tick started in his cheek,
just below his dimple, and his mossy green eyes narrowed on her with distrust.
“Panther.”
“Tiger,” she replied, thankful he
gave in enough to share his alter ego with her. “What are you doing down
here? It’s restricted.” She whispered
loudly.
He readjusted the strap to the
shoulder bag she just realized he was carrying. The action caused a lock of his
black hair to fall into his eyes. She resisted the urge to reach up and brush
it back. It had been too long since she’d found comfort in a man’s arms. It was
the only way she could describe the feelings whirling around her body like a
tornado.
“Do you make a habit of asking
strangers questions that could get you killed?”
The bluntness of his words were
like a kick to the gut. The man had already threatened to break her neck and
now he was implying her actions could get her killed? She’d seen danger all her
life, her home was virtually a warzone. It was why she couldn’t go back. She
couldn’t lose this job because far worse hazards waited for her there.
“If threatening a girl is your
usual pick…” her words were cut off when his lips pressed against hers. At
first, she denied his advance, but the slide of his tongue along her lips
tempered any resistance, and she opened up to him and the pleasures he was
offering. He didn’t hesitate to deepen the kiss. His grip on her waist
tightened, and his other hand eased into the red curls at the nape of her neck
forcing her head back allowing him more control.
She’d never been kissed by a
handsome stranger before, and she intended to enjoy the moment. His tongue took
authority and rolled over hers like an ocean wave driving her desire up a notch,
stealing her breath away. Tension tightened in her middle and grew needy as his
hot, ready body pressed her harder against the cold metal wall of the ship.
They began the primal dance pressing their bodies together at the center and
grinding to a silent rhythm that made them want more.
Her leg rose of its own accord and
wrapped around his waist pulling him harder against her as he masterfully thrust
his hardness against her. His fingers on her waist moved to her thigh and she
felt a pleasurable sting as his fingernails bit slightly into her flesh. Desire
and want rose in her and threatened to send her soaring into the sky like one of
the jumps in her dance.
“What are you two doing in here?”
The harsh tone of a security guard hissed at them, washing over Scarlett like a
cold shower.
The
bastard kissed me to keep from getting caught! They broke from the kiss,
both short of breath, staring oddly into each other’s eyes. A connection was
made, no doubt. What that connection was she couldn’t say with her mind all
jumbled and confused.
He grinned, and with inhuman speed,
picked her up and held her in his arms. “Sorry, officer, we just got married
and were looking for a little privacy.”
Married? She didn’t even know the
man’s name, and she was suddenly his alibi for some sort of criminal activity,
she was sure, but the passion he lit in her from a single kiss kept her from
saying what her brain knew was right. She simply blushed – blushed, and allowed him to carry her off as the security guard
escorted them out of the restricted area.

CHAPTER
ONE
Despite the haze
of sadness that covered us like a blanket of snow, I was happy to see that
River was going to fight for his alpha seat. He’d been somewhat hesitant the
last few times we spoke, always the compassionate one, caring about how his
actions would affect others, how his ascension would impact our lives, never
really seeking the power. But that was River, he was never a power hungry fool.
He cared more for those in his life than status. It was father who pushed him
into the alpha position and expected him to take the proverbial throne. Now
that another had died fighting his war, he took it as a personal debt he needed
to repay. He’d make sure Sylvie’s death was not in vain.
River and I were
in the room when she stopped breathing. We were exchanging shifts. I was coming
on and he was going to bed. She’d survived a week, but was still in critical
condition. Dr. Jacobson and his colleague, Dr. Jericho, had done everything
medically possible, but the magical infection that was attacking her system was
powerful, and being a supernatural wound, we couldn’t take her to the emergency
room. Ericka had called in the best healers available from multiple states, but
with the witches divided the political red tape between those that could help
and those that wouldn’t was thick.
Despite the odds,
we truly believed she’d survive. Isaac was so convinced she’d pull through that
he had relented and allowed us to watch over her in shifts so he could get some
sleep. It was the third day of our shifts when I walked into Sylvie’s room. The
memory of the moment still shook me to the core.
River was holding Sylvie’s hand. He was pleading with
her to fight, tears streaming down his face. “Where the hell is the doctor?” He
growled.
Sylvie’s body convulsed as River held her, his touch offering
any possible comfort his presence would allow. He looked right past me. It all
happened so fast that I barely processed what was happening before Dr. Jacobson
ran into the room, pushing me aside as he went to work trying to save her. When
he started chest compressions, realization hit me. She was dying.
I’d seen death before. I planned to be a doctor. My
father forced me to hunt. I was a she-wolf. It didn’t numb me. I respected the
loss of life. But no amount of familiarity would change the reaction I had when
I witnessed the actual act of a human dying, it was terrifying. A cold, hard reality
that we all face some day. It only made matters worse that she was so young.
Cut down in the prime of life for what? Power?
“Did you hear me, Rayne?” River asked as he pumped the
air bag over Sylvie’s body. His voice pulled me out of my thoughts. “Call Isaac!
He needs to be here.”
I nodded, pulled the phone out of my pocket and dialed
Isaac’s number, never taking my eyes off the frantic scene in front of me. When
I knew he was on his way I took River’s spot at Sylvie’s side. It became a
rhythmic dance between me and Dr. Jacobson. He’d compress her chest, pump pump,
and I’d force air through the air bag over Sylvie’s mouth, squeeze. Pump, pump,
squeeze. Pump, pump, squeeze.
We kept that dance going until Isaac arrived. By then,
it’d been at least five minutes. He arrived to a corpse. The heartbreak on his
face made my chest heavy. I struggled to swallow as he collapsed to his knees.
“No!” It was the most heart rendering sound I’d ever heard. We both stopped the
pump, pump, squeeze tango. Dr. Jacobson shook his head sadly. River turned and
punched a hole in the wall as he let out a deafening howl.
There was nothing
any of us could do. She was gone. Death claimed its first victim in this war.
People started filing into the room. Everyone was there to pay respects. Ericka
and Matthew were the next to let out wails of grief. I just stood there, unsure
what to do. I’d only spoken to Sylvie a few times over the last couple of weeks,
but in that time I realized I liked her. I wanted her to survive. I liked Isaac
with her. They were a good pairing.
“Vengeance will be ours, my friends,” I heard River say. From that moment on, we prepared
for war.
***
The next few days
a rain cloud followed all of us. The Mating Games were put on hold while we
mourned the loss. The men were told they could return home for a week while we
made preparations for the memorial service, but they all stayed which surprised
me. I guess they wanted to show their support. Some even stepped up to help
River with planning the retaliation while Rhyme, Chloe, and I secretly planned
the alpha ascension ritual. Rhyme was Isaac’s strength through the whole ordeal
so it left the majority of the planning for Chloe and I to complete. It was
nice spending quality time with my best friend, especially in a time of sorrow.
We’d both lost our mothers when we were young, it was what bonded us together,
and now we were able to handle the heartbreak that surrounded us because of
those same coping techniques we learned in childhood.
Not that we ever
forgot the pain of losing our parents, but life has a funny way of helping you
get lost in the moment and pushing the pain aside. In the werewolf world, we
knew danger lurked around every corner, more so lately than usual, but it was
there, waiting to sneak up and bite you if you’re not careful. Losing Sylvie,
watching Isaac and the other witches go through the sorrow only served as a
bitter reminder that life was short and there were no guarantees. I could have
lost Chloe a couple times since returning home from college. The night of my
father’s wake when she mixed prescription pills with alcohol, and the
kidnapping where Brick’s sisters, Britain and Jewel, stole her away from us. It
only made me hold on to her tighter. What happened to Sylvie could happen to
any of us, and with the battle on the horizon, there would undoubtedly be more
casualties. I wasn’t going to waste any more time. As soon as River got his
official ascension ceremony out of the way I was going to choose my mate and
start my life.
River had been derailed
too many times at this point not to make it happen this month. I figured if we
waited until it was the right time, the ‘right time’ would never come. Kind of
like that old adage about a watched pot.
The cloud of gloom
that followed many of us around like a lost puppy lifted the day after the
memorial service. The witches had practically moved into the compound which
made us assign the wolves attending the hunt to the bunk houses. We were
running out of room when Lincoln suggested we use the barn as an alternative
for beds.
“They’ll
understand. We’re at war now.” Lincoln ran a hand through his blond curls. I’d
come to know him pretty well. It was one of his tells indicating he was
frustrated that he needed to argue the point.
I didn’t care. These
were our pack mates and placing them in the horse barn seemed tacky, no pun
intended.
“Lincoln’s right,”
Storm offered his two cents as he pulled his long, dark, waves into a pony tail
at the nape of his neck after closing the fridge. Just hearing his voice made
my heart skip a beat. Why did someone so infuriating get to make my pulse race?
“It just seems
wrong.” I argued. Being ganged up on by the two men that were in the running
for my heart was uncomfortable, but seeing how they both responded to pressure
in extreme circumstances was actually beneficial.
“We housed the
infirmary in the barn when Chloe was kidnapped as a precaution in case we had
injured wolves on the hunt. Why would this be any different?” Lincoln asked as
he tapped his thumb on his lower lip while his index finger ran over the
stubble on his chin to indicate he was speaking his thoughts.
He’d actually
become a solid confidant over the last few months. I’d had enough interactions
with him at this point to know he wasn’t my mate, but he was becoming a good
friend and my back up just in case I didn’t find a mate from the contenders.
He’d become important enough to me that I worried about losing him if I had to
eliminate him from the running.
“Why not put them
up at the Myriad Springs Lodge?” Chloe suggested as she drank her tea. She
looked brilliant as she stood in the doorway, sun shining off her blonde curls
giving an illusion of a halo.
“Because they are
our pack and that makes them family.” Storm grumbled as he went to refill his
coffee.
I looked out the
window at the setting sun. How did we get here? How did I become a decision
maker in the pack? When father was alive he had his own council of trusted
wolves all outside of the family, aside from my brother. River chose to keep
his inner circle close to the belt which meant, Storm, Rhyme, myself, even
Chloe were the people who advised him and made decisions for the pack. It was
so odd, also an honor, and really made me grow up fast. I smiled. “You’re
right, Lincoln. Let’s get started on adding beds to the barn just in case.”
“If you’d like, I
can get the other Mating Game contenders to help.” Lincoln offered.
“That would be
wonderful.” I hadn’t used the contenders as much as I should in regards to pack
matters, Lincoln wormed his way into my inner circle because he had become a
pack ally and close friend. He and his pack were ready to help if needed which
was a great card to have in the back pocket.
He kissed me on
the cheek and left the kitchen. Storm growled low in his chest. They all knew
the rules. Eva was a stickler for them. No unnecessary contact with me unless
sanctioned by the games. A kiss on the cheek, no matter how chaste it was, was
completely unauthorized.
I sighed as I
watched Lincoln leave. The man had a body that was made for looking at and his
backside was probably the best part. The problem was my feelings for him had
developed into friendship, not sexual. He was too controlling. My wolf didn’t
like being restrained. “Behave, Storm.” I turned my attention back to him.
“What would Eva
say if she knew how much time you were spending with him?”
My eyebrow rose. “Probably
the same thing she’d say about the time I spend with you.” I told him
pointedly.
“I don’t sneak
kisses.” He took a drink from his mug.
“You probably
should.” Chloe grinned, then bolted out the door laughing.
We both watched
her leave. Her exit left us alone which was rare lately. When I turned back to
look at him he was staring straight at me. The tension was thick like an early
morning fog, and the silence stretched between us for what seemed like hours,
but was only moments. He was waiting for something, but I didn’t know what it
could be. “What?”
After another
momentary pause he shook his head, “I don’t know why I’m doing this.”
I smashed my hand
against my forehead. “Where is this coming from, Storm? Because Lincoln, who is
my friend, kissed me on the cheek outside of sanctioned game activities?
Because--”
“He broke the
rules and you allowed him.” A tick appeared on his left cheek telling me he was
holding in his anger by biting the inside of his mouth. That was a ‘Storm’ tell.
He was always good at holding his emotions in.
“…because plenty
of other men in this house have kissed me far more scandalously than that.” I
shouldn’t have said it, knew I let my irritation get the best of me, wanted to
take it back the moment the words spilled out of my lips, but he had a way of
lighting my fuse.
He rushed up on
me, his face inches from mine. I could feel his breath on my skin and I found
myself wishing he’d kiss me. Despite his furious look, his warmth wrapped me up
like a blanket on a cold evening. I hated how my body betrayed me around him. I
wouldn’t back down and I knew better than to back away or he’d give chase. His
nostrils flared. He scented my interest in him. Heat colored my cheeks, but I
could also see how that calmed his wolf. “None of them will kiss you the way I
do.” He grabbed my shoulders and held me there, staring at me. Both of us knew
what we wanted, but neither willing to make the first move. It was agonizing
moments of silence, both daring the other to tempt them, neither willing to
give in.
“How am I to know
that? You haven’t won any challenges so I can experience your kiss firsthand.” Why, oh why did I let my emotions speak?
‘Because we want to taste his kiss again,’ my wolf responded in my mind eagerly. ‘Kiss him.’ She urged.
A growl rumbled in
his chest, and my hand went up to feel the vibration. My instinct took over.
Being this close to this man held a level of intensity I’ve never felt with
anyone else in my life. Every nerve in my body was on fire, every fiber urged
me to claim him as my own. The past simply melted away in his arms and the
future looked bright. I knew why he was the front runner in this competition. I
understood the sheer, bittersweet attraction. The feel of his granite chest
beneath my fingers, heating my hand through his shirt, had me biting my lower
lip as I imagined how the muscles would ripple under his smooth skin. My
breathing quickened and I silently cursed my attraction to the man.
“I haven’t won any
challenges because I care about you.”
That got my
attention. I shook my head, golden-brown hair bouncing around my shoulders.
“That makes no sense.”
“If you’re meant
to be with another one of these men you need to find out. I’m not stupid,
Rayne. I can tell you want me as much as I want you, but I need to know you
know it is right.”
His words
surprised me. “So you threw the competition?”
He nodded. “The
first one I did. The second we lost because of your ‘friend’.”
“How did you know
I wouldn’t eliminate you?”
“Because.”
“Because what?” I
was losing patience. It didn’t help that he was still violating my personal
space. His hands had slipped from my shoulders to my upper arms. The air around
us sizzled. I swear the lightbulb above us sparked and burned out from the
electrical field our energies were creating. “Seriously, Storm, I--”
He claimed my lips
and all sense was lost. It flew out the window. Fireworks exploded in my body
starting with my gut and reaching every inch of my being. He poured every ounce
of emotion into that kiss and I received it. His tongue slid across my lips and
I opened to receive him. Something primal moved inside me. I felt myself
melting into his strong, capable arms as desire pooled in my core.
His hand cupped my
ass and my insides turned to jelly. He pressed me against him and I felt his
need for me as much as I wanted him. Gods
help me, but I was, in that moment, lost. Something clicked between us. It
was like a key had found the lock and opened my heart.
“What the hell is
going on in here?” Eva’s shrill voice cut through the passionate fog that
wrapped around us like a comforting blanket. We fell apart, guilt on both of
our faces.
“I was… he was
just…” I closed my eyes and sighed heavily. “I’m--”
“It was my fault.”
Storm interjected before I could apologize.
“That’s not really--”
“I take full
responsibility for my actions.” He interrupted again.
“Damnit! It takes
two to kiss, Storm! Quit trying to save me. I kissed you back.” I snapped. Gah! He was the only man that could make me
go from passion to furious in two seconds flat.
Eva’s eyes bounced
from me to Storm and back again like a ping pong ball in volley. “Who initiated
the kiss?”
“I did.” We spoke
in unison.
I glared at him
and I swear I saw the beginnings of a smirk on his face which only fueled the
furious train. This is why we were not good together. “Look--”
Eva held up her
hand to silence me. Why was everyone
shushing me?
“Storm will not be
allowed to compete in the first set of games.”
“That’s totally un-”
“Unfair? Life is
unfair, child. Get used to it.” She signaled for me to leave the room.
I shook my head
and left. Forcing my temper down as I headed to my room. I needed to get it
under control before I said something stupid and caused more drama. I was so
done with being called a child and treated like a princess. I am an adult, and
it was high time everyone started to see that, and part of making that image
happen was acting like one.

The two most satisfying words in an author's vocabulary
Can you guess what those words are? Two words, six letters and a single space. They are so wonderful I usually bold and center them and increase the font size. If you guessed THE END you are correct. I got to write those two satisfying words this weekend and I've been on cloud nine ever since. Rayne's Thunder, the first romantic serial in the Dating a Werewolf Series has been completed, well the rough draft has been completed and I've started on the final read through so I can get the last two installments into the editor's hands. Six installments and 120,000 words later Rayne has her mate, her wedding date, and her happy ever after.
The road was treacherous and action packed. Full of ups and downs and mind blowing twists so I believe it will be a very satisfying read. But you can see for yourself. The first four installments are already available on Amazon at the links below. Check out the reviews and one click into the world of Rayne Manchester and her siblings.

Random thoughts on the theory of ghosts
While researching material for my Ghost Connection series I came across some great articles on how science, in someways, supports the existence of ghosts. First, it's important to point out that paranormal experts haven't come out and verified the existence of ghosts but one theory that they exist can be traced back to one of the greatest scientific minds to date, Albert Einstein. Take one of his basic laws of physics, energy cannot be destroyed.
Break that down. Science has proclaimed we are made up of energy. Some believe that energy is the soul. The essence of what makes us, well, us. The belief that the body is simply a vessel that carries the soul (our energy) on this plane of existence is an easy leap for many to believe. So, if the energy (soul) cannot be destroyed, does that mean when we shed our mortal bodies the soul could be considered energy? Is it a difficult conclusion to deduce?
Then the question must be asked, how come we can't prove this theory without question? Perhaps we have in a way. There are many that claim they can see, hear, even communicate with ghosts. Is it that these people can detect different frequencies? The dog can hear a dog whistle but the average human can't. Is it so hard to believe that there are things that exist beyond what we can see? Take faith, for example, doesn't the very concept of this word require one to believe in things beyond what we can see, hear, touch?
The purpose of this blog post isn't to prove or disprove the existence of ghosts, it isn't designed to test your beliefs or faith in anyway. It is simply written as food for thought. Random musings of a paranormal author that likes to write in the urban fantasy arena, tweaking reality just a little bit toward the supernatural.
Opposing views on this topic state that Einstein's law say it cannot be created or destroyed, only changed. When a body dies the energy changes and merges into the environment or becomes food for the living. I don't know which one sounds like a better option. I mean, ghost or food? Food for the living or environment. If one were to take that stance on the argument then it would be an easier pill to swallow if you believed the energy that makes our body work isn't necessarily the soul but an electrical current that makes the bodily systems work.
Again, this post isn't written to make you question your beliefs but rather mull over the information. I started the Ghost Connection series because I wanted to explore the unanswered questions in this arena. Cassie sees ghosts and the stories are more urban fantasy for the purpose of the fictional genre I primarily write in, paranormal but the premise behind the series is a college girl wanting a normal life despite the fact that she's seen ghosts since she was in a car accident that killed her father at the tender age of seven.
Why does this topic fascinate me so much? I have memories of being able to see ghosts when I was younger. Can I do this now? No. Do I want to do this now? I don't know. I have the training to help increase my psychic 'third' eye through my Reiki meditation work and Hypnosis but unlocking this area of my mind makes me hit the pause button. Somehow as my world changed I put blocks in my life to keep me from being sensitive to things in this arena. So much so that it makes me question whether I had those experiences or if the environment I grew up in and those that influenced me caused me to believe I was sensitive.
It doesn't change my fascination with the supernatural/paranormal but it forces me to look at things in a more cynical mindset. That brings me to my last bit of musing for this post. We are finding out daily how 'the powers that be' (in this case, I'm talking about governing bodies) have hidden certain things from us for fear of how we'd react or selfish reasons (the reasons don't really matter) but the idea that we've been kept in the dark for many topics makes me wonder how much of the civilization/ reality that we live in is fabricated and how much is real. Do we delude ourselves into believing we live in a 'real' world when it's simply a fictional ideal we're taught to believe in?
Okay, enough random thoughts for today. I hope you enjoyed this peek into my mind a bit. I mentioned the Ghost Connection series in this post... please check out the series on Amazon.

Dragon's Succubus
Introduction
Being a princess is a pretty
amazing job, that is, unless you’re a princess of the Underworld. Alleyah “Lee”
Jenkins is the daughter of Hades and a human woman, Joanna. Her birth left her
an orphan in the human realm. When she hit adolescence, she came into her
succubus powers and learned the truth of her birthright. She was destined to
marry a demon prince and together they would rule the thirteenth level of the
underworld. She had different plans.
For the next twelve years she hunted and dispatched demons
to the underworld, honoring the memory of her human mother and clearly stating
her opposition to taking her throne in the underworld. When she meets a bounty
hunter named Connor MacGregor, her world is turned upside down. He is tasked
with the duty of bringing her to justice for a crime she didn’t commit. His
family honor, and the lives of his siblings, depend on him accomplishing his
goal. He didn’t, however, expect to discover she was his mate!
Chapter One
The heavy beat of the techno music
playing over the speakers of the rundown nightclub, Jericho, was a jarring and
somewhat strangely comfortable lullaby for Alleyah Jenkins. Two years ago this
place was the hottest destination in town for a Friday and Saturday night, but
now, they were lucky if a couple hundred patrons came the entire weekend. Lee
didn’t mind the lull in customers or the cut in tips. It made both of her jobs
easier. As the bartender, she rarely had customers waiting and fewer patrons
meant she could focus on her real calling, and tonight she had a new target in
mind.
She’d spent the better part of the
last two hours flirting with a reptile, and she was about to close the deal.
All she needed was her back up bartender, Alex, to show up. She passed the
blond haired, green eyed man a beer and this time held her hand on his for ten
extra seconds. Then, she winked and gave him her best smile before she leaned
over and whispered, “You want to accompany me on my break out back?” She made
sure her abundant chest was positioned perfectly over the bar so he could see
the goods.
The smile he gave back meant he got
the message loud and clear. He was more than willing to join her in the alley
for a little bump and grind. The pieces were falling into place nicely and she
was happy knowing that her diversion would keep the bastard from finding
another woman to torment tonight. If all went well, the last intimate moment
the man had on this earth was going to be with her.
As if on cue, the back-up
bartender, Charlie Harrington, entered the nightclub. She was wearing tight
black jeans and an even tighter white t-shirt which meant she was looking for
good tips tonight. It was odd she was here, it meant Alex was taking the night
off, which he never did on a weekend night. He had to be lying on his death bed
to not be here. Lee made a mental note to check on him after her shift was
over.
Charlie, the redheaded female
bartender, didn’t make it behind the bar before Lee jumped out to meet her. She
gave the girl an affectionate smile and tossed her apron to her partner for the
night. “I’m taking a break.” She smiled as she glanced over to her shag partner
who stood up and followed her sashaying hips out the back door.
The good thing about being a
succubus was she was rarely turned down by men or women. It made her the
perfect hunter. Her curvy body, blonde curls, and violet eyes helped too, but
it was hard to resist pheromones like hers. She could be unattractive and still
be alluring to her prey.
She waited for her mark to make it
across the alley while she sipped her bottleneck beer silently. The grin on the
man’s face was priceless. Demons were always so cocky. This one was no
different. He placed both hands on either side of her head and moved within
inches of her face, trapping her to the wall…or so he thought.
He was focused on possessing her
and she was focused on her mental checklist. Sulfuric smell, yep. Check. Yellow
tinge to eyes, check. He brushed her blonde hair back away from her eyes, and
she took note that the upper half of his ring finger had been chopped off. Body
disfigurement. Minor, but check.
“I’m Reed, what’s your name?” His
voice was silky smooth, almost hypnotic.
Compulsion powers, check. Social
skills and desire to make a connection, uncheck. Okay, not good. Everything
about this man screamed demon so why was he not lining up with her checklist? “No names,” Lee told him as she crushed her
lips to his. Bastard! She never
killed a mark unless she was able to verify, without a doubt, it was a demon. Now
she had to actually make out with the arrogant ass to make sure he was who he
seemed to be. Thankfully, he was a good kisser and responded to her lips
instantly.
She excreted a little extra
pheromones into her saliva as she slid her tongue along his lower lip. He
opened wide to deepen the kiss. His fingers slid down her body and ignited her
inner demon, her succubus side came alive when his hands slipped under her
t-shirt and glided upward to cup her breast. Lee wrapped her leg around his hip
and pressed her urgent, needy body up against his groin. His desire for her evident
in the hardness trying to push itself out from behind his zipper. He moved both
hands up above her head and dipped his mouth to her neck. A moan escaped her
lips and then she heard the click and felt the cold metal against her wrists.
“What the hell?” Her violet eyes
shot daggers as he brought her hand down and she saw the cuff connecting her
wrist to his. “I’m not into kinky stuff without discussing it first.” She had a
feeling he wasn’t into bondage either. The clear look in his eyes told her he
wasn’t under her spell. She’d never met someone who was unaffected by her
hormones. Demons, humans, supernaturals, they all succumbed to the pheromones
her body emitted. Why didn’t he?
“You and I are going to take a
ride, Alleyah.” The glazed-over look of sexual desire was gone, replaced by
stone-cold resolve.
“I don’t ride in cars with
strangers.” She spun around and kicked the back of his knee, the force of the
blow causing him to lose his footing and crumble to the ground. He pulled her
with him. She really should’ve thought that move through. She managed to
chastise herself before her knees hit the dirty, damp ground. The coppery smell
of blood rose on the air and she watched as Reed’s green eyes turned red with
hunger. He wasn’t a demon, he was something else, something worse. He was
something that fed on blood.
Demons fed on the souls they
collected. The souls they harvested agreed to be victims in exchange for
something they wanted. Lee felt sorry for the lost souls that demons consumed,
but those souls chose to be the demon’s food. Blood feeders were different. They
stalked their prey and took what wasn’t offered to them. They were the bottom
feeders of the supernatural races and she despised them, but she didn’t hunt
them. She left that job to the human hunters. Her motivation behind killing
demons was more of a family affair.
Lee threw a punch toward Reed’s jaw
and heard the familiar crack. He turned and gave her a grin as though she
hadn’t even touched him. “By now I’m sure you know I’m not as easy to kill as
your weak-ass demons. Why don’t you be a good girl and come with me willingly?”
“Like hell!” She kicked him in the
face, punched him in the gut, but it wasn’t until she took aim at his groin
that he grabbed her foot, twisted, and slammed her down to the ground.
“Sorry, sweetheart. I like that
part of my anatomy too much to allow you to inflict damage.” There was humor in
his voice. He actually looked like he was enjoying her attempts at fighting for
her life. Jerk!
“Really? It seemed rather small to
me, almost too tiny to care about.”
A deep laugh rumbled from his
diaphragm. “I’m not adverse to taking it out and demonstrating its power.”
“Animal.”
“Yes, I am.” He tugged her up and
pulled her against him. His breath hot on her skin. “Which is a step up on the
evolutionary ladder over you, succubus.” His lips closed the gap and claimed
hers, and the tiniest inkling of hope sparked inside her soul. He was attracted
to her or her pheromones were kicking in. Either way, she had some leverage
that she could use to escape capture. Now she just needed to figure out who
wanted her and why.
His tongue swirled in her mouth and
she reciprocated, both of them feeling a hunger build inside them. “Now, I’m
sorry for this.” He zapped her with an electrical current to the brain which
fried her mind and made her pass out.

Dragon's Dream Dancer
Introduction
Kensi McKenna is looking for a way
to escape the dangerous and deadly future she is fated to live so she turns to
exotic dancing as a way to obtain the financial support needed to break away
from the small Oregon town. The night of her first dance, Tremaine MacGregor
storms into the club and kidnaps her. Her first instinct is to escape, her
second is to help the man and betray her family. No matter what she chooses her
life will never be the same again.
Trey MacGregor is after an easy
bounty. It seems like a piece-of-cake job so he goes it alone and leaves his
family out of it. The moment he walks into the club where Mariah McKenna is
supposed to work his life is turned upside down and becomes far more
complicated. What he doesn’t know is the girl he steals away, his treasured
mate, is his target’s sister. Theirs is a match gifted from the gods, but can
they get past the obvious family problems?
Chapter One
Kensi ran shaky hands through her
coppery red curls as she pushed down the bile rising in her throat from the
fear wracking her mind and body in rolling waves. Her reflection in the mirror
seemed like a stranger to her. The fake eyelashes surrounding her sky blue orbs,
a thick layer of makeup hiding her freckles and flaws, and sparkling body paint
- the only thing covering her nakedness, all seemed alien to her. This was the
only way she could go through with her plan. She told herself the world
wouldn’t see her, they’d see a fantasy image of a girl that didn’t exist instead
of Kensi McKenna, struggling college student needing to escape a future that
held nothing but pain and suffering.
She slipped on the red sequined dress
and knee high stiletto boots over black fishnet stocking-clad shapely calves
leading up to slender thighs. She wasn’t extremely skinny, but she had the
athletic body of a dancer with one minor exception, the larger than average
chest size. It messed with her center of gravity, but she adapted nicely. Next
she fiddled with the position of the long black wig hiding her signature red
hair. The wig strategically hung past her breasts which would be the only cover
she had from onlookers as she danced tonight. The new image of an
unrecognizable person that reflected upon the silver glass surface of the full
length mirror smiled wickedly as her costumed appearance fell into place.
A small level of satisfaction over
the success of her new image began to make her feel easier, and more certain no
one would recognize her, even her brother and sister would find it difficult
spotting her in a crowd. Doubt crept in again. She wasn’t going to be hidden
amongst people. Her body was going to be on display for all the world to ogle.
The thought made her sick and almost sent her running from the club. She forced
down the rising bile which caused a burning sensation in her chest and the back
of her throat. Taking a deep breathe she told herself, ‘I can do this!’ It was becoming her mantra;.a simple chant she said
over and over again to force positive beliefs into her psyche. I have to do this. She had bills to pay.
If she was going to escape the terrifying fate in store for her here she needed
the funds to afford her tuition and to pay for transportation out of this tiny
Oregon town. Dancing at the Bayside Beauties was the only way she was going to
get out, and she needed to run far, far away from this place. There was no way
in hell she was going to become an assassin as her family insisted. She’d die
first.
“You’re up in five, Kensi.”
Jacklyn, the nightclub manager, snapped from the doorway.
Kensi turned to Jacklyn, forcing
down another bout of stage fright in the form of nausea. Jacklyn was not
necessarily the nicest woman for which to work. Kensi guessed it was because
she was in her mid-forties, and age was stealing away her youth and beauty. This
was compounded by the fact that she was surrounded by all the pretty young
girls she employed as dancers at the club. If rumor was true, Jacklyn was one
of the best dancers this club ever had. But her days of glory were over.
Wrinkles on her skin from living a hard life made her look matronly, but took
away her vibrancy. Her body was still in great shape, a sign of a true dancer,
but keeping up with the younger women was difficult. It was the cold, hard
truth of reality, and figuring out her motivations was basic Psychology 101.
“Thank you, Jacklyn.”
The pretty, older woman offered a
tight nod and turned to leave. Instead of walking away, she stopped as though
she had an afterthought. Jacklyn took three long strides toward Kensi. The
jasmine scent of her strong perfume made Kensi’s stomach roll again, but she swallowed
hard past the lump. Jacklyn’s fingers flipped the black wig tresses behind
Kensi’s shoulders and straightened her dress sleeve in a motherly manner.
“Remember, you’re Siren’s Song out there, not Kensi. Siren is a strong, proud
woman who eats men for dinner. Don’t show your fear, they’ll see it and it’ll
ruin the illusion.”
Kensi appreciated the encouragement
and nodded, “I’m playing a character.” Her smile spread across her lips as she
slipped into the character of Siren’s Song. Her mantra playing over and over
again like a broken record in her mind.
“That’s right. You’ll do
wonderfully.” Jacklyn walked away. Shouting from halfway down the hall, she
said, “three minutes” over her shoulder as she retreated.
Kensi took one last look in the
mirror and took a deep breath. It’s now
or never. Each time she repeated her affirmation strength flowed into her
body. She could, and would, do this. She had to earn the money for college and
leave this town, and she had two months to do it otherwise she’d be stuck here
forever.
Her feet started walking to the
side stage. She couldn’t remember giving them the command, but she made it to
the stage just as her music intro started and Jacklyn spoke into the
microphone. “Please welcome Siren Song to the stage for her debut dance.”
The crowd cheered her entrance and
fueled her strength. ‘I can do this.’
Her body started moving to the
music on instinct more than conscious thought. She was dancing, performing, and
playing a character. The lights blinded her to the crowd’s faces. The music
carried her, her character taking over, her fear melting away as her
imagination took her away from her reality. She was aware of the stage, but the
audience didn’t exist anymore. Her leg wrapped around the pole, and her body
contorted in the ways her choreography called for. Sounds from the crowd told
her they were soaking up her smiles and every sexual movement she made. When
the dress fell from her shoulders revealing her naked body covered with
intricate body paint that glowed under the black light the money fell like
crazy on the stage. Men lined up to place dollars in her G-string panties that
matched the body paint perfectly and gave the illusion of complete nudity. She
was no longer Kensi, she’d effectively morphed into Siren’s Song and she was
eating the men for dinner.
*****
Tremaine MacGregor entered the club
looking for the spunky brunette dream weaver known as Mariah McKenna. The
oracle told him the woman worked at this club. It would be an easy bounty, so
easy he decided to take the challenge on his own. His family members had other
things on their plate, especially Connor and Lee who were on their honeymoon.
Besides, the oracle singled him out with the additional helpful information so
he had a head start on the other hunters.
It helped that he understood dream weavers.
They weren’t known to be tough in this world. It was in the sleep realm where they
possessed their power, not the waking one. He’d capture her and rush her to the
portal that would allow him to deliver her to the Tribunal. He’d face their
anger at not following instructions at the time of delivery. He wasn’t a
killer, he was a hunter, and he wasn’t going to take her life just because the
order was for her head.
As a dragon shifter, he was
uniquely suited to hunt this predator. He didn’t need to sleep as much as many
of the other races so staying awake while delivering the package would be easy.
It was the kill order that made him wary of the whole thing. It wasn’t like the
Tribunal to order hits. They were about justice and giving people their time in
court.
He wasn’t disputing how dangerous
she was. Mariah’s race was the worst of the worst in the assassin world. They killed
victims without remorse or discrimination. But there was a need for them in the
supernatural world, and had she kept her business in the paranormal and not in
the human realm, the Tribunal would’ve never put a bounty on her head. But when
she was named responsible for one unsanctioned human death she became public
enemy number one in the Tribunal’s mind.
His eyes barely noticed the girl
dancing on the stage or the topless waitresses flitting around the bar room
insuring the men, and women patrons were heavily numbed by alcoholic beverages.
He was only focused on finding his killer. The smoking atmosphere filled his
lungs and left his stomach queasy. As a dragon he had his own fire and smoke in
his body, and it was void of unhealthy chemicals. The music held an exotic beat
which called to his inner beast. He glanced around with curiosity at the lost
souls mesmerized by the show on the stage. It was like he’d entered an
alternate dimension, and he wondered if the performer on the stage or the
musician who created the song was a witch or siren of some sort.
When the crowd roared its
appreciation, his attention was drawn back to the stage. His eyes locked with
the woman dancing and he felt as though he’d been run over by a two ton truck.
His heart raced, the world spun out of control, and time stood still. In that
instant, he knew she was his mate. His dragon clawed under the surface of his
skin, talons aching to reach out and snatch her from the eyes of the patrons
staring at her almost nude body. She was magic on the stage and she had the patrons
eating out of her hands. Money was falling on the stage floor, but when a
portly man reached up to place the cash in the girl’s G-string, he lost it. The
only hands he wanted to see near her naked body were his.
He rushed toward the stage, his
bounty forgotten. Primal instinct taking over, the need to cover her up his
only focus. A bouncer twice his human size stepped in front of him, blocking
him from his destination. His fist shot out and cracked against the bouncer’s
face with enough surprise force that the man fell backwards, and Trey jumped up
on the stage. His need to cover his mate unbelievably strong.
Kensi didn’t catch the commotion
until she came face to face with a man of gigantic proportions, long dark hair
tied back loosely in a leather band and piercing sapphire eyes. Her heart
stuttered as she stumbled backwards and felt her foot give out. She experienced
a moment of freefall before she felt strong arms wrap around her waist and pull
her against his hard body. When she was upright, she found her lips inches from
his own and fought off the urge to crush her lips to his.
Everywhere he touched was on fire
with sparks of passion, but her mind was raging with anger at his behavior. The
two emotions blended well together like her morning smoothie and created a
reaction in her body. The need to flee was overpowering the desire to fight and
her mind sent commands to her extremities, but logic tried to intervene,
pointing out she wasn’t strong enough, or fast enough to evade this man.
She looked around frantically
searching for the bouncers. One was knocked out in front of the stage and two
more were heading her way. The music stopped, and everyone around them seemed
to be moving in slow motion. Screams broke out as people started realizing what
was happening around them.
Trey wrapped his enormous leather
jacket around Kensi’s shoulders, which engulfed her. Then he pulled her toward
the edge of the stage. She fought back in an attempt to escape, but his grip
was firm and unyielding.
“Let go of me!” She hissed.
“Never!” He snapped as he pulled
her off the stage with one quick movement and tossed her over his shoulder. Another
bouncer approached him, but he used the force of his bicep to drop the
assailant and spun around aiming Kensi’s booted feet at the second bouncer’s
head, smiling with satisfaction when he heard the crunch of a boot hitting a
solid jaw. Knowing these men were watching her dance moments before only made
the action more gratifying.
The woman on his shoulder fought
against him. She wasn’t a shifter, but she was a supernatural. Did she not
recognize him as her mate? He could feel the strength in her thighs as she
squirmed to get free from his grip. Her movements only served to drive his
desire to higher levels. He felt the pressure of his erection push against the
zipper of his pants. Being this close to her was excruciatingly painful, in a
good way. He just couldn’t understand why she hadn’t recognized their
connection.
He knew it the moment his eyes
locked on hers – he knew from the insanity and rage he felt from all the men
that watched her painted body wiggle to the music in her seductive way. Gods, please don’t let my mate be a succubus,
he thought as he headed toward the neon exit sign. Her actions left him no
option but to steal her away from the crowd. Connor had told him meeting his
mate would be like a punch to the gut. The bastard wasn’t kidding.
He’d have to wait until she felt
the connection too, and he wasn’t going to let his furious vixen leave until
she did. The fear that she’d run was too great at this point. He could feel the
anger vibrating off her in waves. Logic was starting to settle in over the
insanity that took over. He knew he’d acted rashly, and she wasn’t going to
easily forgive him for his actions. It would take some cooling off.
He placed her in the black SUV
rental and spoke some words over the door seal, locking her in. Sometimes
having minor magic came in handy. He’d let her begin that cooling stage while
he went back in to find his target. “When you calm down you’ll better
understand what is going on,” he told her through the sealed door. “I’ll be
back shortly.” And with that he turned and headed back into the strip club.
