Taking components of reality and twisting them into Urban Fantasy

I like to mix paranormal/supernatural elements with reality when I create a book. Most of my books fall under the sub genre Urban Fantasy for this reason. I get really stoked when I can take something that has been studied and researched and mix it into my fantasy fiction cocktail to design a new story. My next release does just that, as do many of the case files in the PBI (Paranormal Bureau of Investigation series). Just take a look below to get a peek of what to expect in this new release coming out soon.

Astral Projection, according to Wikipedia is the idea that the soul can leave the human body and travel on the astral plane. It's considered an Out of Body Experience (OBE). Essentially, the person astral projecting is able to leave the physical body and travel to places in the astral body.

Astral Projection has been mentioned in many religions across the world. The science behind the idea is still untapped but there have been multiple studies that have tried to measure the soul, or take pictures of the soul upon death which has resulted in interesting results. It's not astral projection but the but it's an area that has scientific research and is loosely related to astral projection in the idea that the astral body is travelling away from the physical.

Some believe when you Astral Project you must remain tethered to the physical body, others have said that to leave your physical body without the astral walking body leaves your human shell open to invasion from evil spirits.

As one who studies paranormal and supernatural concepts, ideas, and things I've tried astral projection. I must admit, it was a frightening and exhilarating experience all rolled into one. Its not something I'd recommend to others to try because my experience was scary. It felt as though I was being jerked out of my body. My conscious mind was not ready to allow myself to move to that astral plane and until I've studied the process and done far more research I won't be trying that again. However, I've heard from others how amazing it can be.

Remote Viewing, according to Wikipedia is the "practice of seeking impressions about a distant or unseen target using subjective means, extrasensory perception or sensing with the mind". This topic has fascinated me for many years. Combining Astral Projection with Remote Viewing to create super heroes or super soldiers was something I knew I'd always use in my writing and in the upcoming PBI Case Files Adventure titled Remote Paranoia these types of characters make their first appearance in my books. Prior to this upcoming new release I used supernatural characters like Dream Weavers as primary otherworldly beings that could do things similar to what the new remote viewing astral projection characters can do in this new story.

Dream Weavers in the series that I write are supernatural beings that have super powers in the dream world and they often work for the Greek Dream Gods. Many times they are assassins or they are part of an assassin family. Morpheus is the principal god of the dream weavers. Sometimes Hypnos (God of sleep) and Thanatos (death) get mixed up with these characters as well.

In the new Paranormal Bureau of Investigation Adventure you'll meet these new characters to this book series. The Remote Viewers who use Astral Projection are human psychics which makes them uniquely different from Dream Weavers who control the dream realm with powers like astral projection.

In my research I discovered as late as the 1990s governments were reportedly studying remote viewing and possible use of this psychic ability in military capacity. In 1995 the studies were terminated after being transferred from the DIA to the CIA for further testing according to Wikipedia and the research offered no usable intelligence.

This is why I love writing paranormal fiction because this topic can add hours of enjoyable reading material. Remote Paranoia (PBI Case Files #5) will delve deeper into these ideas and have characters that use these abilities... I won't tell you how, you'll have to read the book but imagine combining someone who can astral project and remote view with someone who can make others bend to their will. Ah, the possibilities.

The best selling, highly rated book titled The Witch's Vampire is on it's quarterly kindle countdown deal this week. Her whole life has been a lie but the surprises continue to roll out as the book progresses.

As her world crashes around her and she tries to figure out how to deal with the constant changes, godly battles, and dangerous dreams she meets her soul mate. A lover from a past life. A gift from the gods. Her vampire prince, Giovanni Mancuso.

One click it today and enjoy this great read. Please be kind and remember to review. Here's the link.

Speaking of reviews, here what others have said about this great book.

"Jami Brumfield has done it again! She has created an alternate world going on right under our noses in her latest novel, The Witch's Vampire. Not content to limit her stories to just the usual witches or vampires, she integrates a vast variety of paranormal and supernatural species that make up a global community living side-by-side with everyday humans. This book adds even a more remarkable twist that offers a far-out theory about the mythical Greek Gods as well. It's a fantastical, yet down to earth mystery, but wouldn't be a romance without a very hot and sexy leading man, er, vampire! And new to the whole witch thing, Sophie Waters, is one spunky, take-no-nonsense leading lady who leads with her heart right into the middle of a very dangerous situation. A great read, and I can't wait for the next one." ~ Journalist and author, Michele Gwynn

"Jami Brumfield reigns supreme in the world of paranormal fiction. I became a fan since Lone Wolf Rising and this book, in a new alternate world setting, does not disappoint. What wasn’t there not to like in The Witch’s Vampire as it included all the elements of a great series, witches, vampires, Greek gods, romance, and one hot guy. Sophie was a character that I just had to love, she had so much energy that she will become a force to be reckoned with. Gio, Izzi takes a deep breath and sighs, why can’t every male character be like him. He’s what most women fantasize about if supernatural entities were to ever come about. Okay, more about the story. I think with the whole integration of the supernatural residing among us is a great concept and Jami delivers the storyline as if we know these characters personally. The development and progress of the story flows along perfectly and unfortunately the end comes along way too quick. I would recommend this book to everyone regardless of their favorite genre. Believe me, once you get hooked onto Ms. Brumfield’s books there is no turning back. I’m looking forward the next and it will not come soon enough."

"This is the first book that I have read by Jami Brumfield. I liked the relationship dynamics between Gio and Sophie, even though I am not a fan of the New Adult Genre. That alone, says a lot. The author was able to keep me engrossed in the story with the twists and turns she built into the plot. Most new adult authors fail to do this as the relationships progress to annoying love triangles. This is NOT one of those books! Thankfully! I admired Sophie's need to stand on her own two feet and make her way in the world as she saw fit. Unfortunately life and responsibilities get in the way, which is all to common in the real world. I especially liked the mythology and added paranormal elements to this story. Great job!"

"This was my first journey into the mind of Ms. Brumfield, and what a journey it was! We had witches, vamps, Greek Gods and just about every type of paranormal creature you could want. I really connected with witch Sophie and her hunk of vampire hotness Gio and found myself rooting for the two of them. I loved the plot twist on the origins of the Gods and the supernatural creatures them selves. I look forward to reading the next one in this hot new series and would recommend it to my friends."

"I really enjoyed this book. Ms Brumfiled has written an engrossing and intelligent book. The main character, Sophie, takes you on a trip thru her awakenings in her powers, her deep heart, and her love. Witches and Vampires make interesting bedfellows, nasty antagonists, and enough evil to fill my needs. Read this book! Yes, I am a male, and yes many of read these types of books. Love'em."

Interview with a Fire Witch - Hunter Winters of the Winters Saga

Ever wonder what it would be like to sit down with your favorite characters outside of the pages of the book? So do I. I love interviewing my characters outside of the books. Check out this interview I did with Hunter Winters from my Winters Saga Series.
Hunter Winters entered my office with an easy, likable grin. He shook his blond head and shrugged his broad shoulders to shake off excess dampness. “Miss. Brumfield?”
“Yes, hi Hunter. Please call me Jami.” I told him as I indicated the chair situated across from my desk.
He sat down and gave me his full attention.
I pursed my lips with a concerned frown. “Is it raining outside?” It was not common for rainfall in Phoenix, Arizona this time of the year.
A red blush crept across his cheeks as he lowered his eyes and leaned forward in a secretive manner. “My sister, Savannah, called up a little rainstorm to put out a fire my dragon friend and I created.” He whispered. “I was one of the casualties.”
I couldn’t help but smile. It had to be pretty fun being part of the Winters family. Witches, werewolves, vampires, dragons, psychics, angels, and all sorts of magical creatures were part of the tightly woven group of family and friends. “Your dragon friend, Freya? I was hoping you’d bring her along to this interview.”
“My sisters Miracle and Mystery are watching her. She’s still getting acclimated to this world and has to learn that magic is not something used here in public as it was on the earth she came from.”
I nod, “makes total sense.” I moved my eyes to his face. “How does it feel to know you have two more sisters raised by your recently returned from the grave father?”
“Wow, you ask some tough questions. I guess it’s good to get down to business right away. I’m happy but also uncertain. They don’t seem as involved as we are in the supernatural war brewing on the streets of Phoenix.” He examined his heavily chewed fingernails. “They’ve been lucky enough to get magic training since the day they were born and would really be great assets in the battles but they’re more interested in their own lives, which I can’t blame them… it just disappoints me.”
I nodded, having interviewed his sisters Savannah and Rebecca I completely understood. “Because for so long you and your sisters have always taken care of each other?”
He agreed, “yes, for so long it’s only been Savvy, Becca and me… well grandma was there but she always seemed distant from us. Now that I know her distance was because she was keeping the secret of our bloodline from us makes the whole thing sad. We missed out on so much because of the secrets.”
“Some would say it was secrets that made Savannah a vampire.”
“Possibly, but we all know there’s more to it than that. Our two family lines, the Winters and the Matthews made us targets from the moment we were born.” He looked at me. “Some would say, secrets kept made Rebecca a werewolf. Heck, I got in a sticky situation a month ago because of secrets I kept. Thankfully, our family comes together when things are important.”
                “What secret is that?”
The left side of his lips rose and a twinkle sparked in his sapphire blue eyes. “You’ll have to read Fire Master Rising to find out.” He teased.
“Fair enough, so tell me what it’s like being a fire witch?” I went back to my questions.
                “Dangerous.”
                “How so?”
“Well one time I hurled a fire ball at Rebecca by accident, which led to her sucking the air out of the room and making us all pass out. My girlfriend, Natalia got a head injury from that one.”
“I remember reading about that in Vampire Princess Rising.” I grinned.
“It’s funny looking back now, but scary in the moment. Then when I used blood magic to open the family grimoire I blew up Rebecca’s office. My sister just had to save Rebecca’s front yard from bursting into flames a few hours ago.” He shook his head. “I think it will be cool when I get these things under control but for now, dangerous.”
“Who’s helping you get them under control?”
“Many people; Natalia, dad, grandma, Mysti, Mira, even little Freya. It’s pretty sad when an eight year old dragon has better control over fire than a seventeen year old fire witch.” He admitted sadly. “But I’ll get there.”
“I’m sure you will.” I agreed.
“It’s the empathy that really gets the signals crossed.”
                “Oh?”
“Oh yes, emotions have power and sometimes when I’m overwhelmed with emotions from others it can backfire into my fire power.”
                “That can be dangerous.”
“Yep, especially because I can’t control other people’s emotions. I have to work hard at controlling my empathy in order to reign in the fire.”
“And how is the empathy control coming along?”
“Slowly and painfully.” He looked up at me. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful for the gifts but wished I had better control. It’s hard to keep a secret like this from the rest of the world when you can’t even control when it flares up,” he chuckled, “no pun intended.”
I couldn’t help but giggle myself. He really was an amazing character. So happy about life, reflective, and compassionate. It was refreshing to meet a likable character that held your interest and Hunter definitely did. “In Vampire Princess Rising, we read that you went off to the alternate universe because Ophelia told you the witches in her world could help you cure your sisters. Can you give us an idea of what happened?”
                “Ophelia lied.”
                “Why would she do that?”
“Because she’s a bad guy.” He shrugged, “I can’t really answer to her motivations but she doesn’t like Rebecca and anyway she can hurt Becks she does. I learned a lesson in that situation.”
                “And what is that?”
“I learned that family will always be there… and that family is not just those that share your blood, it’s a deeper connection and a stronger commitment.”
                “That’s an important lesson.”
“One that I’ll never forget.” His phone buzzed. “Sorry.” He looked down at the screen. “I’m really sorry, I’d love to chat more but Freya needs me.” He stood up.
“Sure, I completely understand. Can you just tell me what fans of the Winters Saga can expect when they read your story, Fire Master Rising?”
He nodded and grinned. “I do a lot of growing in this upcoming book. You may remember the drugs I took in Rebecca’s story?” I nod and he continues. “I have some struggles with addiction as a side effect from the Black Death pills. Freya helps me work through it but it’s a difficult battle. I also need to learn to let my sister’s grow in their own direction. The former vampire queen, Violet goes on trial for the massacre of the wolf pack. Savannah plans her royal wedding and there is a showdown between Rebecca’s pack and Ophelia and her otherworld pack. Gosh, there are plenty more surprises. I guess you’ll just have to read it and find out.” He headed to the door as his phone went off again. “I’m sorry I really have to go.”
I nod and tell him thank you and he disappears.
He was right, there are plenty more surprises in store for the fans of the Winters Saga. Fire Master Rising is coming soon. If you haven’t read Rebecca’s story (Lone Wolf Rising) or Savannah’s story (Vampire Princess Rising) check them out on Amazon.

Secrets to finding the perfect paranormal fantasy book

Paranormal fantasy is all about building awesome worlds and amazing characters that are multi-dimensional. I personally enjoy building paranormal fantasy worlds within the world we live in today, commonly referred to as urban fantasy. Other paranormal fantasy worlds are off planet and alternate dimensions. The first tip I'd give you is to decide which you prefer.

That will narrow down the field and help you get closer to your next favorite book or series. Then ask yourself if you like paranormal fantasies written in the past, present or future. All of these areas offer a different flavor and speak to specific tastes.

One of the great things about paranormal is the variety. There are plenty of paranormal or supernatural creatures out there to choose from. Everyone has their favorites. When I do fan events I'm always amazed at how different people are in just their favorite characters. Some like vampires, others like shifters (which opens a whole world of characters), some enjoy witch stories more than others etc. Everyone has their favorites and that makes today's world a wonderful fantasy adventure for readers because authors know this and offer variety... after all, it is the spice of life, right?

Now you've chosen your favorite location, time, and characters. This should greatly reduce the number of books to choose from. Book sellers offer great filters to help you find some awesome gems in the sea of books available. You can also start searching online. Entering these words into your favorite search engine is bound to bring up some of the more popular options out there.

Another great tip to finding the perfect paranormal fantasy book is to join Facebook groups dedicated to your specific tastes, check out and follow/subscribe to book blogs that focus on your favorite types of books, subscribe to internet radio shows that highlight books in your favorite genres. Find your favorite authors and follow them on twitter, facebook and other social media outlets, they may recommend other authors in their genres that are people to check out. Another great place to check out is YouTube.

Once you find a book you'd like to check out, be sure to read any samples that are available, many authors also offer samples of their work on their blogs. Checking out the sample will let you know if you like the author's style and if it grabs your attention.

If you've done all this and are still needing help lighting up your E-Reader or finding a book to run your fingers through, ask your friends and read the reviews. Once you find that awesome author be sure to favorite/like/subscribe to all their social media outlets to be sure you get updates for the new books coming out (many authors like to run giveaways around new releases and cover reveals). Keeping in touch with them in the social media arena will help keep you up to date with what is coming next.

Some of my paranormal fantasies are:

Lone Wolf Rising (paranormal fantasy adventure with romantic suspense) Werewolves among other supernatural creatures. This is book one of the Winters Saga

Book two of the Winters Saga is Vampire Princess Rising (paranormal fantasy adventure with romantic suspense) Vampires and werewolves among other supernatural creatures.

If you like ghost tales and mysteries centered around college life check out the Ghost Connection Series. Book one, Lost

Book two of the Ghost Connection Series is Death Does Not Become Her

If mystery, action, government conspiracy, and romance is your cup of tea you might like the PBI Case Files series. Book one, The Beginning

Outbreak is book two and it has all the elements listed above. In this novella the PBI team discovers the publicized acts of cannibalism in Florida is actually a break out of a mutated strain of Ebola.

In book three of the PBI Case Files series, titled Lost Plane, the team investigates the disappearance of a commercial airliner and it's 200 plus passengers. What they discover are banshees, cyborgs, and time travel...

Justice Driven is book four of this series and two of the team are kidnapped by angry Amazons sanctioned by the Gods for vengeance. The team joins forces with the horsemen of the apocalypse in order to save their friends.

These are just a few of the books I have available. Check out the rest of my books on Amazon. Be sure to favorite my page on Amazon and subscribe to this blog by email.

PBI Case Files spotlight

Part of the success of the PBI Case Files is the danger, intrigue, paranormal mysteries, and twist and turns that you don't see coming and the intense romantic suspense. But the other part comes from the characters and their connections to each other. Their connections to two very human sisters, Frankie and Sarah Hollister. Everything centers around the solidarity in their relationship. The supporting characters: Devon (Sarah's love interest), Fang (Frankie's mate), Karma (demi goddess boss), Jasmine (Frankie's trainer), and Charlie (Sarah's trainer) add amazing dimensions to the story and help it progress in these fast paced, page turners.

Frankie (Francesca) Hollister is the youngest sister, she is a little impetuous and faces down danger like a bulldog. She's outspoken, often times too blunt for her own good, and packs a whallop of a punch, or kick, or head butt if the situation calls for it. She's fiercely loyal and would do anything to protect Sarah, who has taken care of her most of her life.

Sarah Hollister is a little more reserved but when backed into a corner she is quite the momma bear. Where Frankie is the extrovert, Sarah is the introvert; her keen observation skills are highly tuned and her off the chart intelligence (both emotional and intellectual) are why she makes a perfect candidate for the forensic side of the team.

Both sisters were raised with martial arts training, they understand multiple languages, and are masters at deductive reasoning thanks to the life path their parents set them on. One they eagerly followed until their parents were killed when Sarah was 17 and Frankie was 16.

Devon, a dangerous, brooding vampire/agent with a horrific past meets Sarah in his nightclub. He is instantly attracted to her and Sarah reciprocates those feelings of attraction - the alcohol enhanced her desire for him while her intoxication put the brakes on his advances. The missed romantic hook up would fast become the story of their relationship. Star crossed lovers that keep missing each other. Will they ever find their way back to each other's arms or will they continue this dance until there is no way back to the romantic connection they share? It's a love story that is worth sinking your teeth into.

Fang (ie Levi) is a brute of a bear, literally. He's an alpha were-bear who has been Devon's partner for years. They are friends, despite their differences. While Devon is a predator who has had centuries to hone his social graces and create the perfect mask where the beast can hide behind without detection, Fang is a neanderthal man who has very few social skills. Both are alpha males in their own way but because of their differences there is very little competition. Its because of those differences that they've been able to keep each other alive.

While Devon plays a romantic dance with Sarah, biding his time until she relents and becomes his woman, until she realizes what he already knows, that she's his flame - twin flame, Fang discovers Frankie is his mate and pushes himself into her life, openly claiming her as his mate. In Outbreak, he makes a giant sacrifice that pushes Frankie away and may actually keep them from ever discovering the lasting love true mates share.

The romantic games played by these four are stimulating and are slow burns. The agents have a job to do, save humanity from creatures that go bump in the night, which means their love lives take a back seat. It adds for great tension and is weaved into every chapter as they all seem to believe the case comes first.

The first four episodes delve into the past and future of these characters and set the stage for their futures to unravel in multiple directions. Will they choose the right path? Will the right path be the wrong path?

Every great story has a beginning. Find out how Frankie and Sarah became agents for the Paranormal Bureau of Investigation in this episode. Get your first taste of the vengeful Amazons and the shared spark of passion between Devon and Sarah from this episode. The Beginning on Amazon.

Read another excerpt from The Beginning here

In episode two titled Outbreak, Frankie is prematurely put into the field after Devon is injured from an Amazon attack. Sarah fears for both Devon and Frankie in this episode and does her best to support from the sidelines as she is put into her new role as forensic analyst, working for a scientist that makes it clear she doesn't like her.

While Frankie fights to be a valuable member of the team in the field, butting heads with Fang the entire way, Sarah sits at Devon's bedside as he fights to rid his body of the poison coursing through his veins and she fights with her feelings for the vampire.

In the field one of the agents is infected with the deadly virus that turns the human hosts into cannibals, with a need to feed so intense it becomes known as a zombie strain. Karma pleads with the gods for help to save the agent but ultimately it comes down to the sacrifice one man is willing to make for the human he discovers is his mate.

For another excerpt from Outbreak (PBI Case Files Adventure two) click here.

One of the best things about the PBI Case Files is that you can read them out of sequence. The story is far more enhanced reading them in sequence, but just like watching a television series, you can miss an episode and get caught up on what you missed by watching the new ones. And just like a television show, you can always go back and read the previous episodes as well. To get Outbreak click here.

Lost Plane (PBI Case Files Adventure three) catapults you into another century as the PBI and the ABI (Alien Bureau of Investigation) agents work together to discover what happened to Avalon Flight 370 and the 200 plus passengers and crew that disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Alien abduction was the first assumption but the ABI managed to disprove that hypothesis so the PBI were tasked to prove an unknown paranormal creature wasn't involved. They didn't expect to run into a banshee who discovered there were many other odd disappearances throughout history, similar to this one or a cyborg from the future. What they discover will rock them to the core of their belief systems and force the team to make a difficult decision that could cause a catastrophic ripple in time.

The action and romance in this episode will keep you intently flipping pages and getting further engrossed into the lives of these dynamic characters.

Fang wrestles with the need to tell Frankie what he did to her and Frankie struggles with the need to put as much space between her and him. Devon learns he may have competition for Sarah's heart and Sarah learns that Devon may not be the one she was meant to love.

And yet there is still more happening in this awesome book. Check out this excerpt. And if you want the entire episode you can get it on Amazon here.

Justice Driven is the fourth book in this series and if the twists and turns haven't shocked you up to this point, this episode is sure to turn your world upside down and ask... what the hell just happened?

In this episode, Devon and Sarah finally have that first date and sparks fly. Check out how this episode begins here. As the two are enroute to the next stage of their love affair they are taken hostage by Devon's familiar enemies, the Amazons. Frankie and Fang partner with unlikely allies, the horsemen of apocalypse, to save their partners. Deals are struck, and the group sets up a trade for Sarah and ambush for Devon's rescue.

As one can imagine, nothing goes as planned and while Frankie and Fang are forced to pause the rescue mission passion explodes and tempers flare. Sarah is subjected to horrific torture at the hands of the women warriors who maintain a Stepford-wife-like-persona and cover.

As the battle comes to a head the team learns they have a traitor in their ranks. Frankie is forced to watch as the vampires are injected with a neutering serum and her mate is shot point blank as he attempted to shift to protect his team and her.
